False land claims, delayed payments: Greek farm-subsidy probe reaches cabinet

Claims to land the applicants did not own and inflated livestock numbers sit at the centre of Greece’s farm-subsidy investigation. Some recipients had no connection to farming at all, according to reporting by Euronews and Greek Reporter. The alleged scheme centred on Crete.

The record

The political fallout reached the cabinet: the agriculture minister, civil protection minister and deputy health minister stepped down. Twenty politicians from the governing New Democracy party were reported to be under investigation, and waivers of immunity were sought for 11 MPs.

Farmers awaiting legitimate payments protested the delays. Their position exposes another consequence of the case: while investigators examined who had received funds improperly, people entitled to support were still waiting for it.
